This book does contain some darker themes surrounding rape and violence toward women and children.
Chapter 26: Cassia describes a violent outburst toward Poppy by her biological father because she is deaf. It doesn’t happen on the page, only in a brief retelling of events.
Chapter 41: Cassia shares a recount of her rape. It’s happened several years before this story, so there is no ‘actual’ rape scene in this book.
Chapter 51: This chapter involves a violent attack against Cassia and her pregnant friend/employee. It is graphic and upsetting. However, it isn’t dragged out, only lasting a couple of pages. You could skip this chapter altogether.
Chapter 59: Cassia reflects on previous information she’s been given that we haven’t had up to this point. The information includes an attack on another woman (who is not depicted in this story), resulting in the loss of her pregnancy. We don’t get the details, only a general statement.
